This week we were introduced to the IMCI chart which is an algorithm used to classify specific childhood illnesses and treatment regimens in developing countries. This chart is commonly used by community rural nurses in absence of a doctor to determine the acuity and further need for intervention. When we arrived at the communities health clinic we observed numerous children waiting to be seen by the Doctor. Therefore, we each picked a child, followed the IMCI tool, assessed the children to classify their illness, and gave appropriate health teachings as needed. The IMCI tool is a very useful, quick, and thorough way of assessing an ill child.
